We are the faith community of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Derry, New Hampshire, dedicated to continuing the mission of Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic tradition. We proclaim the Good News, using our time, talent and treasure to reach the new, the wandering, the poor and the unloved. United in God, we are committed to growth in faith through worship, spirituality, outreach, education, and fellowship. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and nourished by Word and Eucharist, we seek a deeper, more personal relationship with Jesus Christ as we passionately share Christ's love with all people.

THESE THREE?

These Three?Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Recently someone gave me about twelve boxes of books, all of a religious nature. As I began to look through them I also realized that they were almost all Catholic. Very quickly I began to organize them into three groups; traditional, conservative and liberal. The task was very tiring because I was saddened that the Church was in such a state. The more I sifted through all these books, the more difficult it became and I wanted to just walk away in frustration. Finally I finished my sorting and went back to the Friary. When I saw Brother Charles I told him about the books and he reminded me to "stay with the Church". That simple phrase spoke volumes to me. Never mind this theologian or that, this visionary or that, this guru or that... just go back to "Peter". With all the convincing logic of so many authors that sounds really good, it`s most important to always go back to what the Church teaches. And who represents the whole Church... the Pope. Always go back to the beating heart of the Church. Read the Catechism. Read the encyclicals written by the Holy Fathers. Read the teachings of all the great Councils of the Church, beginning with the first Council in the Acts of the Apostles. The more that we know the authentic teaching of THESE sources, and the more that we mold ourselves (our thoughts, feelings and actions) according to these Truths, the more Catholic we will truly be. Is this a formidable challenge ? YES ! But if we want to know and live by what is real and true then we must do it, no matter how hard. Along this "way", we will know - not frustration - but a peace and joy that only Christ can give to our hearts. It is to this end that I would like to begin a simple time of reflection on the Sunday Scripture readings. Beginning in September I will meet with whoever shows up to read and discuss the readings for the following Sunday. Our reflection and discussion should rest on the foundation of the living tradition/teaching of the Church. It won't be easy to stay on the right "path" - it never is - but we'll try and hopefully grow in the Faith of Jesus Christ - our Holy Catholic Faith. God bless you all. Love... Fr. Bruce, ofm
